What to report
Mention slates that have moved out of line, a visible gap or fragments found below the roof. Keep away from the area beneath loose materials and take photographs only from a safe position.
Check the neighbouring slates
The assessment should look at the displaced slate, adjacent fixings and accessible supporting battens. Several slates moving across a slope can suggest a wider fixing problem, rather than several unrelated accidents.
Replacing one slate or repairing more?
A local replacement can make sense where the surrounding roof is sound. More extensive deterioration may justify work to a larger section. Ask what was found around the visible defect and why the proposed repair is sufficient.
Getting the replacement right
Size, thickness and fixing details matter alongside colour. Reclaimed slate may help with appearance, but its condition still needs checking. The quotation should explain the intended match, repair area and any allowance for damage found beneath the covering.
Can the work be done without scaffolding?
That depends on safe access, roof height and the position of the repair. A small number of slates does not necessarily mean a simple access arrangement. Read about slate and tile roofing and what affects repair costs.
