Signs worth mentioning
Tell us about damp beneath the meeting point of two roof slopes, visible debris in the valley or damage noticed from a safe position. Water can travel before marking a ceiling, so the stain alone cannot identify the failed detail.
Following the water route
The valley lining, adjacent tiles or slates and the route towards the gutter need checking together. The assessment should distinguish an obstruction from a damaged lining or a problem at the edges and joints.
Local repair or a longer section?
A focused repair may suit an isolated defect where the surrounding detail remains sound. Repeated leaks or deterioration along the valley can call for a wider repair. Ask which part has failed and what evidence supports the proposed extent.
Agree the scope
A useful quote identifies the valley section, proposed lining material and treatment of surrounding roof coverings. It should explain any tiles that must be lifted and replaced, access arrangements and how hidden damage will be handled.
Can a valley leak be fixed with sealant?
A surface patch does not establish why water entered. The repair needs to suit the lining, joints and movement involved. See roof repair assessment and what to record about a leak.
