Keeping sound slates in place
Calverley’s appraisal distinguishes stone-slate coverings on earlier buildings from dark Welsh slate on later properties. Those materials need different matching and handling decisions, even when both look grey from the street. If sound slates can be retained, the quotation should explain how they will be sorted and supplemented. On a property reached from a narrow lane, agree unloading and material storage before work begins.

Finding the cause
Ask for the repair boundary, sorting of retained material and replacement specification to be clear. Where heavy covering is involved, the condition of the supporting structure also matters. A matching appearance alone does not establish structural or technical suitability.
Planning your roofing work
Mention narrow side access, walls close to the property and any shared rear route. Material handling and safe access can form a significant part of a small repair.
What belongs in your quote
A clear quote sets out the materials, access and waste removal, as well as the repair itself. It should also explain what happens if opening the roof reveals further damage, so you know how any extra work will be agreed.
