Where an extension meets an older roof
Idle’s older village centre combines stone-slate and later slate roofs with folds, yards and an irregular lane layout. When a later extension meets one of these older buildings, the junction and the route to reach it both need attention. Describe which roof is leaking and whether access comes through a shared yard or passage.
Local building reference: Idle roof materials and access setting (council assessment, PDF).
Finding the cause
Ask whether the leak involves the top covering, an upstand or flashing set into the wall. If a new flat-roof system is proposed, confirm the condition of the deck beneath it and how the connection to the older building will be formed.
Planning your roofing work
Mention side passages, garages and levels between the garden and the house. Access to the junction should be allowed for even when most of the roof is easy to reach.
What belongs in your quote
A clear quote sets out the materials, access and waste removal, as well as the repair itself. It should also explain what happens if opening the roof reveals further damage, so you know how any extra work will be agreed.
Use the roofing quotation checklist or understand the main cost factors.
