Checking each part of a larger roof
The council’s Ilkley appraisal identifies stone slate on older central properties, with blue slate or red clay tiles on later buildings. Avoid treating every older roof as the same material. If your roof has several slopes, ask the survey to separate covering defects from chimney and valley faults and explain how replacement units will connect with the sound material retained.

Finding the cause
Ask for the inspection findings to identify covering defects, flashing failures and drainage issues separately. Where existing slate can remain, the repair specification should explain how new work will match and connect without disturbing more sound material than necessary.
Planning your roofing work
Mention steep driveways, gardens below the work and access around bays or extensions. Scaffold position and material handling should be considered at survey stage.
What belongs in your quote
A clear quote sets out the materials, access and waste removal, as well as the repair itself. It should also explain what happens if opening the roof reveals further damage, so you know how any extra work will be agreed.
